The manuscript of this compilation with commentaries on the Gospels is attributed to 18th century West Armenia while the silver binding is dated to around the late 17th century from Kayseri, then part of the Ottoman territores. The use of precious metals to embellish the bindings of Christian manuscript is a long-standing tradition in Armenia, typically done to express the donor’s piety, wealth, and power. The front cover of the binding bears the Nativity scene, along with an inscription banner, in erkat’agir script, held by angels that translates into “Glory to God in Heaven and peace on Earth”. On the back, God is depicted enthroned flanked by Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary above a scene of the Last Judgement.
