Tafsir is derived from the word meaning ‘to explain, to interpret or to elucidate.’ It is a branch of religious study focused on explaining the meaning of the Qur’an. This manuscript is a copy of the tafsir or commentary of the Qur’an written by Husain Va’z Kashifi, who completed this work between 1491and 1494. The scribe Nasrullah ibn Sayyidi Ahmad ibn Qadi Jan had faithfully reproduced Kashifi’s work. Shown here are the opening pages. On the other pages, each Qur’anic verse is written in gold, red or blue ink, with the interpretation of each verse in black ink.
