Embroidery stand and frames

This embroidery stand and frames belonged to a member of the Aljunied family, Sharifah Noor Aljunied. She was skilled in various forms of Malay world metallic thread embroidery such as "tekat timbul" (couched embroidery) and "kelingkan" where flat metallic ribbons were used to give a beaten metal effect. Her talent was significantly deployed in creating elaborate, fine wedding garments and related paraphernalia to appropriately dress the wedding couple. The Aljunieds are one of the prominent Hadhrami Arab Peranakan families in Singapore and the region. Hailing from Hadhramawt in Yemen, the Aljunieds had established themselves as traders in Palembang first before Syed Omar bin Ali Aljunied (1792-1852) went over to Singapore after the British had set up a trading post in 1819.
