Lady Sophia Raffles was the wife of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, who established a British East India Company trading factory in Singapore in 1819. This book was presented to her in 1834 by Adele de Stael, widow of Auguste, the elder son of the French woman of letters Madame de Stael. Lady Raffles stayed with Adele at her inherited property Coppet in Geneva during her travels in Europe in the 1830s.
