The nilvilakku or ritual lamps placed on the ground are commonly used by Hindu and Syrian Christian communities in the southern Indian region of Kerala. Made in brass or bronze, the nilavilakku are lit at the start of ritual ceremonies. The lighting of the lamp also forms the auspicious start to performances.
