Pair of lamps

This pair of oil lamps consist of heavily moulded glass goblets, set on gilt namwood bases carved in the unsual form of grimacing lion-dogs bearing flower baskets on their backs. The carved lion-dogs are auspicious guardian animals and are the bearers of deities and offerings in the Buddhist world. The fine cut glass vessels were probably imported from Europe and were easily replaceable. These lamps would have been used on a Peranakan Chinese altar. The burning of oil lamps, candles and incense was a traditional way of making offerings in the Peranakan home. Ornate lamps such as this, were lit on special occasions such as weddings.
