This book, published by The Youth Book Company (新加坡青年书局), belongs to the ‘Singapore and Malayan Chinese Literature’ (新马文艺丛书) series. Miao Mang (苗芒) was the pen name of Huang Youji (黄友吉), who was formerly known as Wu Yun (吴韵). He was born in Singapore in 1935 and was an active participant of the Malayan literary scene during the 1950s to 1970s. Miao Mang grew up with Singapore, and was witness to the progress Singapore from a colony, to part of Malaysia, to an independent developing country. His works looked at the lower echelons of society in times of political upheaval, anti-colonialism, and emerging patriotism. This novel, ‘Amongst the Clash of Gong’ (《铜锣声中》), depicts the hardship of peddlers during such the 1950s.
