The title of this copybook means “The maxims of Peng Gong Bao.” Peng Gong Bao refers to Peng Yu Ling (彭玉麟) (1816-1890), a prominent court official who lived during the late Qing dynasty. The title “gong bao (宫保)” or “Tutor of the Crown Prince” was bestowed on him posthumously.Printed by the Qiu Shi Zhai Yin Xing (求石斋印行) in China, this copy book was likely used in Chinese schools during the early- mid 20th century. Chinese schools would have their students practise calligraphy from such books to hone the students’ skills and expose them to Chinese culture and traditional values.
