This is a set of documents related to the power of attorney issued by Syed Abdulrahman bin Abdullah Alkaf, Syed Hassan bin Abdulllah Alkaf, Syed Abdulrahman bin Shaik Alkaf, Syed Abubakar bin Shaik Alkaf, and Syed Abubakar bin Hussain Alkaf from Tarim, Hadhramaut on 21 April 1919. This set comprises of two translations in Malay and English of the original document written in Arabic. It was granted to Syed Alawi bin Abubakar bin Ahmed Alkaf for the purposes of obtaining the letters of administration for the estate of Sherifa Mariam binte Abdulrahman Alhuinduan, in their capacity as the executors of the estate of the deceased, who died in Tarim on 11 February 1919. These men were appointed in her last will and testament published on 23 January 1919. The power of attorney was verified and sealed by the Cadi of Tarim, Shaik Ali bin Sallim bin Omar Arfar Ba Raja. It was first translated from Arabic into Malay by Shaik Awad Saidan of No. 9 Lorong 14 off Geylang Road, Singapore, on 10 June 1919. It was subsequently translated from Malay to English on 24 June 1919 for use in the Supreme Court of the Straits Settlements, division of Singapore.This document is part of the John Koh collection which comprises of various legal documents in Arabic, Jawi, and English, and serves as a record of the 19th and early 20th century colonial legal systems in Singapore and the interactions of various ordinary individuals with the law.
