This is a set of documents related to power of attorney issued by Shaik Abdullah bin Abdul Rahman bin Mohamed Ba Fadal to Syed Alawi bin Abubakar Alkaf, comprising of a copy of the original written in Arabic and a cover page.Syed Alawi was authorized to represent Shaik Abdullah and to mortgage Shaik Abdullah’s half of the share in house No. 22 on Angulia Road, Singapore to Abdul Rahman bin Shaik Alkaf for the sum of 800 Mexican dollars. He could receive the money and pay it to his account, sign the mortgage deed in Shaik Abdullah’s name, and pay the charges. He was also allowed to request for the assistance of any other person or grant a power of attorney if required. This power of attorney was verified and sealed by the Cadi of Tarim, Shaik Ali bin Sallim bin Omar Alfar Ba Reja. It was first translated from Arabic into Malay by Haji Abdullah Omar of 52 Buffalo Road, Singapore on 21 November 1918. It was subsequently translated from the Malay language into English by the Malay interpreter of the Supreme Court of the Straits Settlements in Singapore on 6 December 1918.This document is part of the John Koh collection which comprises of various legal documents in Arabic, Jawi, and English, and serves as a record of the 19th and early 20th century colonial legal systems in Singapore and the interactions of various ordinary individuals with the law.
