This is set of documents concerning the power of attorney issued by Syed Mahomed bin Abdul Rahman Aljunied to Syed Abdul Rahman bin Junaid bin Omar Aljunied from Terim, Hadhramaut on 11 June 1920. It includes an English translation of the original document written in Arabic, as well as the statutory declaration of the translator Hussain Abdeen EF of No. 89 Selegie Road, Singapore published on 24 August 1920. Syed Abdul Rahman was authorized to do the following: collect the rents of Syed Mahomed’s houses, lands, and property in Singapore, issue seals and warrants to eject tenants, to make such claims and defend, to make the necessary payments to, and to ask for the assistance of any other persons according to his discretion. He was also required to do the same concerning the houses of Sheriffa Noor binte Oman bin Abdul Rahman Aljunied and those belonging to the children of Syed Abdul Rahman bin Ali Aljunied. He was to discharge these duties “according to Laws and Mohammedan Law”. This power of attorney was verified and sealed by Syed Mahomed in the presence of the Kadi of Terim, Shaikh Ali. These documents are part of the John Koh collection which comprises of various legal documents in Arabic, Jawi, and English, and serves as a record of the 19th and early 20th century colonial legal systems in Singapore and the interactions of various ordinary individuals with the law.
