This souvenir garden spade was presented to the late Mr Lim Kim San, then Minister for the Environment and Member of Parliament for Cairnhill Constituency, at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Cairnhill Community Centre on 30 November 1980. During his illustrious public service career, Mr Lim also held ministerial positions in various ministries from finance, communications and education to defence and national development. Mr Lim Kim San was also the first Chairman of the Housing and Development Board (HDB), who was best known for his contributions in housing the population of Singapore in the 1960s.
