The Straits of Singapore were a busy thoroughfare even before the founding of Singapore. In 1811, 90 English East India Company warships and transports sailed through the Straits of Malacca. With over 10,000 troops, this was probably the Company’s largest invasion fleet. It went on to quickly conquer Java and a young Raffles became the island’s first and only Lieutenant-Governor.
