View of the Capture of the Maria Riggersbergen

The Action of 18 October 1806 took place off the Batavia Harbour, with the British Royal Navy frigate HMS Caroline fighting the Dutch squadron. The Dutch frigate Maria Riggerbergen was captured when it was unsupported by the rest of the squadron. It was subsequently recommissioned by the Royal Navy as HMS Java. This incident was part of the Napoleonic Wars and led to the eventual British elimination of the Dutch squadron from Batavia later in 1806 and the invasion of Java in 1811. This print was engraved by Thomas Sutherland, after an original work by Thomas Whitcombe.
