Prior to establishing the British trading settlement on Singapore in 1819, Raffles was Lieutenant Governor of Java from 1811 to 1816. This article, published in the first volume of the Asiatic Journal in 1816, was written by Thomas Watson, Raffles’ aide-de-camp. In it, Watson provides an account of the tour Raffles made through the central districts of Java between April and May 1815.
