Malacca (Melaka)

Lieutenant James George, an amateur artist, was part of Governor-General Lord Minto’s British expedition to the region in early 19th century. This is an iconic view looking across towards the mouth of the Malacca River. The dating, 1818, is significant for its portrayal of Malacca as a trading port in the region. It contextualises Singapore’s establishment as a British settlement in 1819 within the broader history of the Straits Settlements.
