Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry

Founded in 1906, the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry was first established to represent the interests of the Chinese business community in Singapore and to facilitate relations with the imperial Chinese and British governments.

Its formation showed how Chinese entrepreneurs adapted to the community’s needs, creating a business group that crossed dialect and industry lines for the first time. The chamber initially leased a site on Hill Street and bought the property in 1911. The original premises was a two-storey traditional Teochew mansion owned by merchant Wee Ah Hood.

In 1961, the chamber embarked on redeveloping the site. The new building was officially opened in 1964 by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and subsequently underwent another round of refurbishment in 2017.
