One of the oldest schools in the area was the Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS), founded in 1899 by Dr Lim Boon Keng, lawyer Song Ong Siang and scholar Khoo Seok Wan to provide Chinese girls with modern education.

The Orchard Road area has a history that spans almost 200 years, and it contains historical landmarks which are the legacies of communities who lived and worked at Orchard Road long before it became a street known for its shopping malls. This short route introduces some of the lesser-known historical sites of Orchard Road.
