This early work, painted in 1963, is one of the few surviving watercolour paintings by Ho. The piece illustrates a bustling streetscape in Singapore’s Chinatown. One side of the buildings along the left side of the street is depicted under bright, warm sunshine; this contrasts the cool blue-purplish used to represent the buildings on the right side that are cast into the shadow. Bold colours highlight other elements in the painting such as cars, street-hawker stalls and the clothing of the people on the street. The subtle dramatic and decorative sense conveyed in this work further enlivens the representation of an everyday scene. The work, representative of Ho Yee Ping’s early artistic practice, was displayed in the first exhibition of the Singapore Watercolour Society held from December 10 to December 13, 1970, at Victoria Memorial Hall.
