“Singapore Riverside” (1965) is among the few surviving examples of Lee’s early work. Street and Singapore River scenes are among the favourite subjects of Singapore watercolour artists; however, many such pieces produced since 1980s tend to be commercial work. It is indeed rare to find watercolour paintings created as early as in the 1960s by a then young generation of Singaporean watercolourists that also demonstrate technical confidence and a fresh energy in illustrating common everyday local scenes. The three works exemplify Lee’s achievement in the watercolour medium and are representative of early artworks by a Singaporean watercolour painter that centre on local subjects.
