Heman Chong is an artist, curator and writer, whose interest in the conceptual and philosophical aspects of text and time has been translated into objects, images and installations, as well as situations. Calendars (2020-2096) comprises of 1001 images of Singapore the artist took, created over a period of seven years. The work has been guided by the principle that the images had to be documented during periods of public access, and that the sites had to be devoid of human activity or trace. Calendars present a vast and vacant urban landscape of Singapore that is both familiar and uncanny at the same time. Images of the vernacular, spanning communal plazas, public housing, supermarkets and other transitory zones have been set by the artist in a timeframe of the year 2020 and beyond, suggesting a stagnant future, or one that is suspended in time. Further to being the artist's representation of time, embedded in the work are conceptual gestures and narrative possibilities that suggest ambiguous prospects of the notions of home and of history.
