This ornate box is decorated with a foliage design in repoussé technique. Smoking tobacco, like chewing betelnut, has long been integrated into traditional social ritual customs of Southeast Asia. It was offered as a token of hospitality to friends and guests. On ceremonial occasions, tobacco was indispensable the vessels to hold tobacco leaves provided an opportunity to display one's wealth and status.
