This is a receipt from Wen Cheong. Established in 1919, Wen Cheong is opened by Peng Bai Wei, who was one of the founders of Singapore Gold and Silver Merchants Association (now known as Singapore Jewellers Association). The receipt contains a seal that indicates “all forms of jewelries and gold ornaments purchased will be refundable calculated at market price less ten percent and minus the cost of the workmanship as shown on the receipt”. This showcases the role of the association in standardizing the price charged for the refund of gold ornaments sold by member jewellers.
