This is a receipt from Weng Cheong Co., Ltd, one of the oldest goldsmiths in Singapore, established in 1919. Gold, a symbol of wealth, nobility, and good luck for Chinese people, has customarily been given at weddings and other celebratory occasions. It’s economic and symbolic value make it a previous gift and possession among various communities in Singapore. In the 1950s in Singapore, there were more than 20 goldsmith shops established by the Cantonese along South Bridge Road. Many opened early in the 20th century.
