This studio portrait depicts Soh Beow Seng, Nancy, 26, in her bridal gown ahead of her wedding with Quah Chin Siong, Danny, in 1975. Soh was one of the first batches of flight operations staff in Singapore Airlines -- a career that spanned almost three decades from the 1970s to 2000s. She continued working full-time after her marriage and the birth of her two children. Her husband Quah Chin Siong (1946-2023) is the grandson of Quah Chin Lai (1892-1990), a metal and machinery hardware tycoon and philanthropist in early to mid-20th century Singapore. This portrait is part of a set of documents, including postcards and photographs, recording memories of the couple during their courtship, leading up to their wedding ceremony. Collectively, the items chronicle events in the relationship trajectory of a middle class couple in the 1970s, at the same time shining light into the family lives of one of Singapore’s early Chinese business trailblazers, Quah Chin Lai, and his descendant.
