The transmission of historical knowledge, stories and folklore in the Malay world was mostly dependent on oral traditions that were passed down through generations. Words in the Winds pays homage to this tradition by portraying a storyteller narrating different stories from the Sulalatus Salatin and the Nusantara (represented by a stylised map of the Malay world). All of this takes place against the backdrop of a landscape of Bukit Larangan (present day Fort Canning Hill), which was the site of many stories, folklore, and histories in ancient Singapore. The painting itself is influenced by textile traditions in the region and incorporate methods, colours and patterns reminiscent of Batik.
