Construction material – possible “manufactured sand” which is crushed granite – comes in on a barge into Singapore’s east coast, going past its Changi Airport, where an aeroplane had just taken off from Singapore. As a land-strapped coastal city, Singapore tries for solutions to expand its useable land area as its population increases. This photograph is from Singaporean photographer Sim Chi Yin’s Shifting Sands series, which documents the role sand plays in land reclamation and the impact it has on the social, environmental and political landscapes in Singapore and the region today.
