The ceramic tiles originally decorated the grave of Mr Chua Kwee Hock (蔡貴福) who passed away on 16 November 1922 (壬戊年九月廿七日). Mr Chua's grave was one of over 3,700 graves that were exhumed between 2013 and 2014 for the construction of a new road through Bukit Brown Cemetery. The tiles decorated part of one of the tomb shoulders of Mr Chua's grave. Both tomb shoulders were decorated with dust-pressed tiles of the same pattern, that were produced by Danto Kaisha Tileworks in Japan.
