This document belonged to Choong Kim Siew, a Leading Seaman with the Royal Malaysian Navy. In 1957, Choong joined what was then known as the Royal Malayan Navy. A standard practice upon entering a military unit was to surrender one’s civilian identity card in exchange for a military identification card. Upon discharge, an officer would return his military identification card. This document was issued to Choong upon discharge, confirming that his military identity card had been withdrawn and that he could request a civilian identity card.
