Zhang Zhi Dong (张之洞) was a Chinese official from the late Qing dynasty, who was known for advocating conservative reforms. He served as the provincial governor of Shanxi province, the Viceroy of Huguang and the Minister of Military Affairs. This copybook focuses on his style of kai shu (楷书) or regular script.Printed by the Shanghai Yu Gu Shan Fang Yun Xing (上海育古山房印行), this copy book was likely used in Chinese schools during the early- mid 20th century. Chinese schools would have their students practise calligraphy from such books to hone the students’ skills and expose them to Chinese culture and traditional values.
