The original version of this book was written in the late Qing period by Lu Xiangfu 卢湘父, a friend of prominent reformer Liang Qichao. Both men were proponents of female education. This book was meant to educate both women and children about Confucian morality. Arranged in four-character phrases, it is grouped into rhyming stanzas to make it easy to memorise. This book was printed by Zhi Cheng bookstore in Singapore, which was located in Chinatown. Zhi Cheng and Yong Cheng bookstores were among the earliest bookstores to publish classics and later books in vernacular Chinese.
