This Christmas and New Year card was made in 1944 and was given to Lieutenant Penrod Dean by his fellow internee John McGregor. Both Dean and McGregor were members of the Australian 2/4th Machine Gun Battalion and were interned in Changi after the fall of Singapore. They later escaped into the jungle for three months before being caught. Upon their recapture, they were sentenced to two years' solitary confinement in Outram Prison. The card was given to Dean from McGregor and commemorates the Christmas of 1944 and wishes the recipient a return from active service for 1945. It also contains the insignia of the 2/4th Battalion and a personalised monogram of Dean's initials.
