This birthday card was made by prisoner-of-war John McGregor for his fellow internee Penrod Dean. Both men served in the 2/4th Machine Gun Battalion of the Australian Imperial Force. They were interned in Changi prison camp upon the fall of Singapore, and later escaped into the jungle for three months before being caught. Upon their recapture, they were sentenced to two years' solitary confinement in Outram Prison. Both internees eventually returned to Changi, where McGregor made this card for Dean. The card, with the subtitle 'Souvenir of Changi', contains a stylised sketch of Changi Beach as well as a short poem wishing Dean "many birthdays more / but none again as a prisoner of war".
