Malay Huts, Macpherson Bridge

Charles Henry Cazalet (1818-1860) was a proficient artist-traveller in the 19th century. Born in India and educated in Southampton and Paris, Cazalet spent three years in Penang between 1856 to 1859 as part of his duties, during which he made several watercolours. These early impressions of port cities such as Penang contextualises Singapore’s establishment as a British settlement in 1819 within the broader history of the Straits Settlements.
