This cloth is a comparatively rare baby carrier or gendongan. Its design includes fertility related motifs which were intended to protect children from spiritual harm. The central motif is likely a reference to Guanyin, the Chinese Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. It was produced in one of the many family-run workshops at Kedungwuni and Pekalongan in Northern Java.
