Large floral bouquets, with swallows in flight and a couple of peacocks, decorate the centrefield of this baby carrier or ‘gendongan’. Designs on baby carriers are not merely ornamental but symbolise fertility and possess protective powers against malevolent forces. Baby carriers were used by tying the ends of the cloth together and slinging it over the shoulder and around the neck with the child nestled safely inside.
