This hardwood European-style design sideboard belonged to Mr. Eric Alfred’s father-in-law’s family. The sideboard was made in Johor and is a representation of the locally-made hardwood furniture produced in the early 20th century. Mr. Alfred was the ex-curator of Zoology at the Raffles Library and Museum (1957-1967) and the ex-acting Director of the National Museum of Singapore (1967-1973). His father-in-law’s family was from Ceylon. They first moved to Malaya and eventually settled in Singapore before the war.
