Crowd gathering to witness the Japanese surrender

This photo shows a crowd gathering to witness the Japanese surrender in Singapore in 1945. The end of the Second World War in the European theatre was swiftly followed by the Japanese surrender in the Far East. In Singapore, the Japanese, led and represented by General Seishiro Itagaki, signed the surrender documents on board the HMS Sussex on 4 September 1945. An official surrender ceremony was held at the Municipal Building (now called City Hall) eight days later on 12 September.
