During the Mamluk period, impressive pieces of brassware were commissioned for sultans and their 'amir' (court officials). Many of these showed off the officials’ titles. The inscription explains that this basin was made for an amir of sultan Malik al-Salih. Two sultans shared this title, one reigned from 1324 to1345 and the other from 1351 to 1354.
