This is an English translation of the power of attorney granted by Ghaida binte Sallim bin Hadi on 29 May 1915. It was issued to the sons of Hadi bin Ali bin Ahmed Altui Ba Salamah, Mahfooth bin Ali bin Ahmed Altui Ba Salamah, Omar, and Sallim, as well as the sons of Ahmed bin Ali bin Ahmed Altui Ba Salamah, Abdullah and Ali.They were authorized to hold, look after, and keep all the share to which Ghaida was entitled to as one of the heirs in the estate of her son, Abdul Rahman bin Taib bin Ali bin Ahmed Altui, who died in Shibam, Hadhramaut on 14 May 1915. Ghaida was entitled to one sixth of the share of all the estate owned by Abdul Rahman in Shibam and Mukalla, consisting of houses and immovable assets such as plantations and date trees, as well as movable property such as cash and outstanding debts. Ghaida was also included in her son’s share of the property in Singapore, comprising of houses No. 178 at Rochor Road and No. 92 at Arab Street, along with her share in the estate of his brother, Ali bin Taib, of houses No. 17 on Chin Chew Street and No. 177 on Rochor Road. This document is part of the John Koh collection which comprises of various legal documents in Arabic, Jawi, and English, and serves as a record of the 19th and early 20th century colonial legal systems in Singapore and the interactions of various ordinary individuals with the law.
