Stele with both Shakyamuni and Buddha of the Past (Prabhutaratua)

Two seated Buddhas are situated on a plain plinth with recessed skirtings, each has an aureole. They sit in padmasana (lotus posture) and in varada (gesture of benevolence) and vitarka mudra (gesture of argumentation) in mirror-image. Two bodhisattva flank the Buddha, standing on a simple plinth. Under the main Buddha's plinth, a pair of confronting lions guard the lotus bud or a lamp of light, two other figures may be a representation of the pilgrims paying homage to the Buddhas. This episode is derived from the Lotus Sutra.
