Seated Avalokiteshvara

This is an unusual sculpture. The bodhisattva is seated in dhyanasana (meditation posture), in a vajrahumkara mudra, crossing his hands near his heart and clasping a lotus bud in his right hand. The diadem of the crown bears a seated image of amitabha (the Buddha of the past and transcendental Buddha of Mahayana Buddhism). He wears a beaded meditation cord, collar with central foliate ornament, foliate armbands, long dhoti and circular earrings, and is encircled by an aureole of stylized flames. This sculpture has considerably influenced the iconography of Indonesian Buddhist sculptures of the next two centuries.
