Slippers (unsewn)

This pair of unsewn men’s slipper faces uses the technique of bead embroidery on a cotton canvas. This is a technique where beads are attached onto a base of fabric using a needle and thread. This is usually done with the support from a ‘pidangan’ (embroidery frame). Petit point beadwork is used here in which the needle worker uses coloured beads to stitch out the decorative motifs. Coloured glass beads imported from Europe are used to create the decorative geometrical patterns. These include diamond shapes made up of white and red beads. Such geometrical motifs are typical of the art deco period.
