This pair of beadwork panels uses the technique of petit point beadwork in which the needle worker uses coloured beads to stitch out patterns drawn onto square paper. The beads used are possibly ‘seed beads’ or ‘Rocaille beads’. Such beads were referred to as ‘manek potong’ by traditional nonyas. The beads used here are largely cylindrical in shape. Such bead embroidery was usually done on velvet or plain weave cotton and required the use of a frame or ‘pidangan’. These pieces use various coloured beads to create decorative geometrical motifs. They were possibly used as pillow ends.
