Panel

This salmon pink rectangular panel is formed using the method of bead embroidery or threading. This is a technique where coloured seed beads are stitched onto a base fabric using needle and thread. There are several decorative motifs on this panel. These include flowers, birds and what is possibly a pair of Chinese guardian lions. They are believed to have mythical protective powers. Birds and flowers in full bloom are considered auspicious symbols that represent fertility and abundance. These panels were usually used as table covers, ornamental hangings, pillow and bolster cases just to name a few. Larger panels usually functioned as drapes for the wedding bed, doors, windows and altar tables among others. The auspicious designs on this panel meant that it was possibly used during wedding ceremonies.
