Tanjong Katong beach

This photograph shows the coastal stretch of the old Tanjong Katong, which extended from Upper East Coast Road to Tanjong Rhu. Tanjong Katong means 'turtle point' - Katong being a species of sea-turtle that is now extinct. The coastline was particularly popular with wealthy Straits Chinese, Europeans and Jews who often built mansions, hotels and recreation clubs along the beach for weekend getaways.
