Tanjong Katong means 'turtle point' in Malay. In the early days, sugar cane and cinnamon were planted in the area but during the 1840s, large expanses of land were cleared for coconut plantations. Tanjong Katong was to become like a holiday resort for affluent town dwellers and some wealthy Chinese businessmen even built houses along the beach.
