This photograph was taken in a village in the old Tanjong Katong, which had stretched from Upper East Coast Road to Tanjong Rhu. Tanjong Katong means 'turtle point' - Katong being a species of sea-turtle that is now extinct. A vast coconut estate called the Grove Estate, which belonged to Thomas Dunman, Singapore's first Superintendent of Police, was located along the stretch from Tanjong Katong Road to the former Grove Road which is now known as Mountbatten Road.
