Indian washermen were referred to by the Hindi term 'dhobies'. This name came into popular use during the mid 19th century when Indian laundrymen washed their clothes using the water from Sungei Bras Basah. In this photograph, Indian dhobies are shown washing clothes at Serangoon Road, one of Singapore’s earliest roads.
