Indian washermen were referred to as 'dhobies' ('dhoby' meaning laundry in Hindi), and the name came into popular use during the mid 19th century when Indian laundrymen washed their clothes using the water from Sungei Bras Basah. Here, Indian dhobies could be seen at Serangoon Road, one of the earliest roads across Singapore.
